80 Miles

80 miles. After last night’s 4.5 miles on the treadmill, that’s all that separates me from my goal of running 1000 miles in 2011. To be completely honest, I had pretty much all but given up on this goal shortly after having set it. I wrote that 2011 goals post right at the start of the year, before fully realizing the extent of my injury (I was still pretty much in the denial stage at that point). Barely 2 weeks later, I had accepted the reality of my ITBS injury.

You can see from my dailymile stats that January and February were very low mileage months for me. Luckily, after that I had gotten my ITBS largely under control and was able to ramp up my mileage quite a bit through the summer, with August being my biggest running month ever at 132 miles.

With 27 days left in 2011 – which means 27 days of running, thanks to my run streak – I need to average just under 3 miles per day to meet my goal. I think that’s totally doable, especially considering that on the weekends, I typically get in at least one longer run that will bring up my average considerably.

1000 miles or bust! This should be fun 🙂

  1. What I like about this is that it’s attainable and smart. Your lower mileage in November helped you recover from those higher mileage months, so your legs will be able to handle it better. I saw a few tweets/dailymile posts last week of people needing 125-150 miles to get to 1,000. With closing out the year to get to a certain mileage, that last month shouldn’t be anything crazy over any other months.

Most importantly with this, have fun! It’s awesome to be able to run this time of year!

Great blog! I’ve enjoyed your story and seeing your progress in meeting your goals. One thing you had mentioned was how one of your goals for 2011 was strength training. Any updates on that front? You completed the 100 pushups program in 2010, I believe–have you continued to do pushups? How strict was your form? I think 100 consecutive pushups would be incredibly hard to do with strict, proper form. Anyway, best of luck in your future endeavors!

  3. Definitely doable and a great goal. I need 1 more km to hit my 2011 goal and will do that on a run with my wife tomorrow.

  4. I really like your idea of running 1000 miles in a year. I am going to set a goal to walk 1000 miles next year.

Enjoyed reading some of your running-related posts. Way to bounce back from ITBS and to log so many miles this year! How have things worked out re: those last 80 miles? I’m biting my nails in anticipation to hear word…

  6. Just passed 1000 miles last night – made it by the skin of my teeth! 🙂

Way to go! 1000 miles in a year doesn’t seem like a hard challenge until you start actually running.

Keep running and good job and keeping a hold on your goal!
