My longest run yet felt pretty darn great!

This afternoon I went on my longest run yet – just over 8 miles! I was really happy with how well it went. I finished the run in about 1:17:30, giving me an average pace of around 9:37 min/mile, which I’m pretty pleased with.

Going into the run, I was a little worried about how well my left foot was going to do. It’s been feeling fine during my shorter runs this week, though I was worried that it might act up again on a longer run. But thankfully, my foot felt great during – and after – my run.

If there’s one thing that Anchorage does not have a shortage of, it’s trails. In fact, part of my run today was on a new trail that they are still working on. The dirt/gravel was a nice change of pace from the paved trails and sidewalks that I usually run on.

After today’s run, I’m feeling much better about my first 1/2 marathon coming up in 6 weeks. To be honest, I’ve been pretty nervous about being able to actually run the full 13.1 miles with a relatively short amount of training, but now my confidence is much higher.

One thing I discovered is that I’m definitely going to need to start experimenting with using some type of sports gel or energy bars during my long runs, because I could really feel my energy level dropping after about 5 miles. Any good recommendations?

    Im no help on the gu or gel.
    I held mine through a long run at home and never used 🙂
    and same with the half.

    If you need suggestions on types to HOLD Im yer misfit!

  2. Great run! If you can do 8 miles at that pace you’ll have no problem finishing the HM. Keep up the great work!

  3. Thanks John. I’m feeling pretty confident about the 1/2 marathon at this point. Now that I’ve done 8 and 10 mile runs, I don’t have much doubt about being able to run the full distance, it’s just going to be a question of how long I can keep my pace up.

  5. That’s a great point Jeremy – my commute (one way) is only about 4 1/2 miles, so that definitely applies to me!

    I’m going to have to get out around my local area more, I know there are some cycling trails but I may have to find some for running too.

  12. I eat high fiber cereal (like bran flakes) because it seems to burn off slower. I would suggest the same to you.

  15. Some friends had me try the Hammer Gels and I like them a good bit. I used one at the beginning of my Tri and at my transition to the run. Good luck!

  16. FANTASTIC long run! Yes, I think electrolyte supplements are really important when going on long runs. I am totally partial to Clif Shot Bloks. In love. These are the most decadent gummy bears in the world, and they give you endless energy! I can’t recommend them enough.
