Something that I’ve talked to a few people about on Twitter and DailyMile, but never really openly, is Marathon Maniacs. If you’ve never heard of it, it’s basically a club for people who run a lot of marathons. But the kicker is that you have to qualify to get in. It doesn’t matter how fast you run your marathons, just that you complete them. And you have to run a certain number within a given number of days in order to qualify at different levels. The different levels range anywhere between bronze for having run 3 marathons in 90 days, all the way up to titanium level for 52 marathons in 365 days.
It’s something I’ve been aware of for a while, and something that’s been in the back of my head as a “maybe, someday” sort of thing. Well, that someday is fast approaching. Earlier this spring, I was looking at my race schedule for the summer and fall, and realized that I was pretty close to qualifying. I had the Moose’s Tooth Marathon on August 21, and the Marine Corps Marathon on October 30. All I needed was one more in between to qualify at the lowest (bronze) level, to have completed 3 marathons within 90 days. Before I rushed off and did anything crazy, I decided to wait and see how my racing and recovery went through the summer. Well, so far it’s gone great, and I decided to go for it. So last week, I signed up for the Kenai River Marathon on September 25 – next weekend!
After I cross the finish line of the Marine Corps Marathon on October 30, I will have completed 3 marathons in 70 days, and will proudly and happily be joining the ranks of the Marathon Maniacs!
i too will share in this “maniac” status… maine marathon and mount desert island are 14 days apart, which is another aspect of the bronze category (2 within 16 days). enjoy your vaca to our side of the country 🙂
I’ll hit it this March.
Very cool, great to hear Joe!
Awesome! I wanted to do that this year, but everything needed to go perfectly leading up to it, so maybe another year. Its a pretty cool accomplishment. Marine Corps is fast approaching!
Yes it is! Very excited for MCM, hopefully we’ll be able to meet up!
